Company history
1938
The nora systems story begins in 1938, with the first production of rubber shoe soles in our factory in Weinheim. However, the roots of the company lie in the 1849 established tannery, Carl Freudenberg. Materials made of rubber are later replacing leather little by little.
1950
In 1950, the rubber floor covering success story began. After that both product areas have gained a worldwide reputation over the years. The production expertise gathered at the site forms the basis of our innovation history.
1960s
During the movement of the shoe industry to low-wage countries, we were facing new challenges and started the development of the well-known EVA range for orthopaedic shoe engineering.
2001
Buy-out of the business area Continental shoe components with the brand CONTITECH. Heel- and soling materials are being integrated into the nora® product range and since distributed under the nora® trade mark.
as of 2004
Specialisation and further development of EVA materials, e.g. vulcanised sheets like Lunatec combi for sandwich technique.
2007
The Freudenberg group sells Freudenberg Bausysteme KG. Consequently the company name is changed to nora systems GmbH, which is still located in the industrial park Freudenberg, in Weinheim.
2013 – 2016
nora systems continues to focus on quality ‘Made in Germany’. Therfore, we invest in new production facilities and technologies at the Weinheim site. Further, novel materials like Lunatec motion are being developed and produced.
2018
In 2018, nora systems was acquired by Interface Inc., Atlanta (USA). Interface is the world’s largest manufacturer of modular carpet tiles for the commercial sector.
2022
Development and market launch of Lunatec fusion, a global innovation in the area of expanded EVA materials which ensure a reliable, permanent bond without the additional use of adhesive. This allows fast, clean, environmentally friendly and healthy manufacturing of insoles and foot beddings.
nora looks back upon more than 80 years of history: The advantages of the fascinating material rubber were recognized at an early point. Since then, innovative developments, pioneering production methods, and uncompromising quality assurance have been creating floorcoverings and shoe components of the highest quality. The production of shoe components began in the 1930s. Flooringcoverings have been in production since 1949.
Today, in the business sector of EVA solutions for health and industry, nora systems GmbH offers a full range of products for orthopaedic shoe engineering, prosthetics and orthotics, shoe repair, and many other industrial application. The brand nora® stands for top material quality, innovative product development, and a practical and varied product range.
EVA sheets from nora® production have advanced to become the material standard in orthopaedic shoe engineering; the standard that provides orientation for the entire industry. In their variety of colours and their different levels of mixture hardnesses and densities, nora® EVA sheets have been instrumental in the pioneering development of the craft.
The Brand nora®
We often get the question as to where the name nora® comes from. As early as the 1930s, production of gaskets and shoe soles began in Weinheim. The chemist responsible for the development of rubber mixtures was Dr. Nürnberger. So the name nora® was taken from the Latin form of his name (Norimbergensis).
Initially, until the end of the 1940s, this brand name stood for rubber shoe soles. As production of floorcoverings began in 1949, the brand name was also used for this sector. Today, the brand nora® is known worldwide and epitomises high-quality rubber floorcoverings and EVA solutions.
